Gaston Gilabert is a university professor at the University of Barcelona, where he teaches literature and theater from different periods (from the Middle Ages to the contemporary). His training includes two bachelor's degrees, a master's degree and two doctorates. He has received the Extraordinary Award at each of the three levels (bachelor's, master's and doctorate) and the award 'Premio Internacional de investigación científica y crítica sobre literatura española'.
Gilabert is specialized in the dramatic art of the 16th and 17th centuries -dramatic theory, staging, ecdotics, comparative theatre, music and literature, theater of the Spanish Golden Age, history of Catalan theatre‒, although he has also worked on themes and authors of contemporary theater (José Sanchis Sinisterra, Sergi Belbel, Josep Maria Miró, etc.). He has carried out research stays, gives lectures all over the world -Buenos Aires, Paris, Heidelberg, Venice, Montréal, Zürich, New York, Münster, etc.- and directs doctoral theses related to dramatic art and its history.
He is the author of more than fifty publications, among which is the paper in which he disclosed his discovery of a manuscript linked to Lope de Vega. As for his books, stand out Música y poesía en las comedias de Bances Candamo (2017), Entre nalgas protegido: escatología y contracultura del Humanismo al Barroco (2021) and El encanto de los dioses: mito, poesía y música en el teatro de Lope de Vega (2021). Finally, in the field of critical text editing (with introduction and notes), we highlight his edition of the comedy Vida y muerte de san Cayetano, written in collaboration by six playwrights (2020). He recently edited Los figurantes, by Sanchis Sinisterra, for Austral publishing house (2022).
Likewise, Gilabert combines his work as a university professor and researcher with creative writing and stage direction: trained at Sala Beckett, he is the author of more than a dozen dramatic works, has directed more than twenty-five plays and, since 2011, directs METADRAMA, the Theater Research Center of the University of Barcelona. Between 2014 and 2018 he was president of the Spanish Federation of University Theater.
