Sergio Hernández (S.H.) obtained the Bachelor's Degree in Physics from the University of Barcelona in 1998, following the itinerary of experimental physics. Once these studies were completed, S.H. began his predoctoral studies at the Jaime Almera Institute of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas -CSIC- (August 1998) while also starting the third cycle studies within the doctoral program Program of Instrumental Techniques of Physics and Materials Science (Department of Applied Physics and Optics, University of Barcelona), in the 1998-2000 biennium. The finalization of these studies concluded with the defense of the research work entitled 'Phonons in self-assembled quantum dots of InAs / GaAs' (09/29/2000) with maximum qualification (work carried out under the supervision of Dr. Luís Artús Surroca, CSIC) and thus obtaining a Research Aptitude Diploma. The following three years of his PhD were devoted to the development of the doctoral thesis entitled 'Vibrational properties of compounds based on (In, Ga)As' [developed at the Jaime Almera Institute (CSIC) under also the supervision of Dr. Luís Artús Surroca and presented at the University of Barcelona on 05/29/2003]. The thesis work was focused on analyzing the vibrational and optical properties of group III-V semiconductors, using optical techniques such as Raman scattering, infrared and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The thesis work was awarded the highest grade of Cum Laude, thus obtaining the title of Doctor in Physics. During this period I was awarded with the predoctoral fellowship of the Generalitat de Catalunya (FI, Formació de personal Investigador). Afterwards, S.H. was awarded with a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship to study electro-optical materials (group III nitrides) at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK), from November 2003 to November 2005. At this postdoctoral stay, S.H. had the opportunity to get training in a multitude of optical characterization techniques, such as photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence, optical absorption and XEOL (X-ray excited optical luminescence). After this stay in Scotland, S.H. got a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral fellowship to work in the same group that he is at present co-leading. This postdoctoral fellowship ended when he obtained a position as Professor Lector (September 2007), which has become Associate Professor (September 2015). Since S.H. joined the University of Barcelona, he has actively participated in teaching, internal management of the department and in the supervision of students, both undergraduate, master and doctorate. It should also be mentioned that since February 2014 I have been coordinating the Official Master's Degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology offered by the University of Barcelona and, since October 2017, the Erasmus Mundus + Master's program in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (http://www.emm-nano.org/). From the point of view of the research, S.H. has participated in the development of national and European projects, studying different types of luminescent materials (ZnO, MgO, SiOx, GaN, InN, InGaN, Si), both at the level of structural, optical, electrical, electro-optical and photonics characterization. Finally, from the point of view of technologic transfer, S.H. is one of the co-founder of a spin-off company (Enlighting Technologies) aimed at developing efficient smart light sources (http://www.enlighting-tech.com/)- info
