Nuevas aproximaciones a la caracterización de fuentes sísmicas y su integración en modelos de peligrosidad sísmica basadas en fallas. Seismic hazard models, usually based on historical and instrumental seismicity, can be improved by integrating information on the sources (active faults) obtained from a combination of geological, paleoseismological, geodetical and geophysical studies. This is challenging, especially in regions deforming at slow and moderate tectonic rates, where paleoseismologic and geodetic data on fault activity are difficult to obtain. Although at a smaller rate, highly damaging earthquakes, also occur in such areas (e.g. Western Europe), where large uncertainties in seismic hazard combine with low societal awareness, to result in increased seismic risk. The present proposal is directly related to RETO 5, Part VI, that states the need to prevent and mitigate the geological risks associated to natural disasters. Our main objectives are to: 1) characterize with increased precision the seismic parameters and strain rate data of selected active fault systems in 3 regions of eastern Iberia: the Eastern Betics Shear Zone (EBSZ); the High Pyrenees (HP); and the Baix Ebre Basin (BEB); 2) develop and test cutting edge methodologies for seismic source characterization (in geochronology, geodesy, and geophysics); 3) reassess the effect of introducing these parameters into forefront probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analyses (SHA); 4) increase the local population awareness on earthquakes and seismic risk; and 5) training a young researcher in combining paleoseismological and seismic hazard analyses. Targeted structures, ideally suited to test these approaches are: in the EBSZ: the Carboneras, Alhama de Murcia and Palomares faults (CF, AMF, PF); in the HP: the Maladeta fault system and unknown sources of recent seismic crises; and scarps potentially associated to seismogenic faulting, in the BEB. The selected study areas share a potentially large seismic risk owing to dense population or infrastructure exposure. We plan a multidisciplinary methodological approach combining: 1) paleoseismology: including completion of accurate slip-rate transects across a selected fault (AMF/CF) and the characterization of the PF, still poorly known as compared to other sources in the EBSZ; In the BEB/ HP: characterization of new sources; 2) enhanced chronology of the paleoseismic history by using: Violet OSL, Aminoacid Racemization, exposure dating (Smith Hammer/cosmogenic nuclides), hyperspectral images in trench walls and, a Bayesian approach to obtain an integrated model of ages and events; 3) geodesy: revisiting existing GPS networks and processing CGPS data (2 new stations to be installed in the EBSZ) to constrain the 3D velocity field (Iberian Peninsula); InSAR to explore inter-seismic strain distribution (EBSZ); 4) geophysics: constraining the geometry of seismic sources at depth by Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Magnetotellurics, Ground Penetration Radar, and the use of UNrIDDLE newly acquired Reflection Seismics; and development of mathematical classification techniques to provide a pseudo-3D physical-properties depth model across the CF/AMF. This range of disciplines will provide new datasets of active fault parameters, to be included into avantgarde Seismic Hazard models for eastern Iberia. Time dependent hazard models will be obtained, and their impact on hazard maps will be assessed. We will update, disseminate and promote feedback on a web page devoted to schools, including specific contents on geology of earthquakes in the Iberian Peninsula.
