I am a computer scientist/software engineer turned linguist (after some training in psychology, neurobiology and evolution). Therefore, it should come as no surprise that most of my scientific work focuses on using computers, databases, statistics and simulations (but also experimental approaches) to understand language (its origins, evolution and diversity) seen in its wider context. Importantly, this wider context of language includes, in my view, our evolution, our culture, and the multi-faceted environment in which language is used and transmitted. A particular interest of mine is in the patterns of linguistic diversity and the factors (linguistic and otherwise) that explain them- info
