I got my Physics degree (intensification in Electricity, Applied & Industrial Physics) in 1988 atthe University of Barcelona with an average mark of 3.1/4. Thanks to an FPI grant under the National Programme of Microelectronics, I did my Ph.D. in the National Microelectronics Center that received Honour Awards (Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado) in 1993 at the University of Barcelona. During my Ph.D. I pioneered the development of silicon micromachining at the CNM and I developed a miniature pressure sensor for biomedical applications (in-vivo cardiac pressure measurement using catheters). In 1994 I won a Human Capital Mobility Grant for a post-doc at the University of Rome 'Tor Vergata', Department of Electronic Engineering. In my post-doc in Rome, I was introduced to the pattern recognition element of biologically inspired olfaction systems. In 1995 I won a permanent position at the UB (Profesor Titular) and I was very involved in the set-up of a new degree in Electronic Engineering at the University of Barcelona. I was IP for the first time in 1998 and since then I have been always active in national, European and industrial projects. From 1995 I have been active in few research lines always related to sensor components and systems. From 1995 to 2007 I was very interested in the physical modeling of Microsystems using the Finite Element Method and the extraction of compact models that can be implemented in Analog Hardware Description Languages. From 2008 to 2015 I developed a drowsiness detection system for car drivers funded by FICOSA SA. This industrial project had a very intense component of signal processing and machine learning, and finally the implementation in an automotive embedded system. A landmark of my CV has been the presence in the market of this product by a major Japanese car producer. Since my postdoc, there has been continuous research activity in the area of chemical sensor systems. Initially, the activity focused only in chemical sensor arrays (a.k.a. electronic noses). In this area, I would like to highlight the coordination of the European project: Bio-ICT Fp7 NEUROCHEM: Biologically Inspired Computation for Chemical Sensing, where we developed applied computational models inspired by the olfactory system of vertebrates and insects. From 2004 I have developed an interest in non-conventional applications of Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS). IMS is a very sensitive & fast chemical detection technology that however is strongly non-linear and poorly selective, posing problems in the posterior data processing. We are mostly interested in health and food applications. In 2008 I was appointed group leader at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia leading the group on Signal and Information Processing for Sensing Systems. At IBEC, we have been working in projects in the area of volatolomics (volatile fraction of the metabolome) for breath and urine in cooperation with Hospital Clinic de Barcelona and Hospital Vall d'Hebron. These samples can be analyzed using Mass Spectrometry Methods, but also Ion Mobility Spectrometry or Chemical Sensor Arrays. All those cases require intensive signal and data processing, as well as very careful model validation techniques. Currently (according to Web of Knowledge) I have received 2332 cites and I have an h-factor of 25 (excluding self-cites) . Date January 2020- info
