Marta Ibañes is currently associate professor (profesora agregada) at the Condensed Matter Physics Department of the University of Barcelona (UB) and member of UBICS (University of Barcelona Institute of Complex Systems). Marta received her BSc (1997) and PhD (2001) in Physics from the Universitat de Barcelona. As FPU fellow during her PhD, she studied constructive roles of stochastic fluctuations in phase transitions. Her Thesis received the 'Premi Extraordinari' award from UB (Dept. ECM). Afterwards she became first a postdoctoral Fulbright scholar and then a postdoctoral research associate at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, USA (2003-2005). During this period, her research contributed to the modeling of left-right symmetry breaking and morphogen gradients in vertebrate embryos. In 2005, she returned to the Universitat de Barcelona as a 'Ramon y Cajal' Researcher and became associate professor in 2009. Her current research interests are within the field of Systems Biology.
