Ph.D. with distinctions (Barcelona, 2004), LL.M. (New York, 2005), J.D. (Barcelona 1996). My PhD thesis addressed the rights of immigrants subject to return proceedings; later on I also published on topics like the political participation and the integration of immigrants in European societies. I have carried out research stages in New York, Brussels, Lausanne, Strasburg and Heidelberg. Author and co-author of different books, articles and chapters of books on Immigration and Refugee Law.
In terms of research projects, I have participated in several regional and national research projects, as well as some European ones. At present I am leading with Prof. Sonia Parella (UAB) a Recercaixa 2016 research project on "Foced Marriages" and I am engaged in the creating an academic network on labour integration of refugees.
I have also (co)authored several reports for different public administrations in Spain and have participated in expert groups counselling the Ministry of Labour in Spain, the Catalan Secretariat of Migration or the Local Education Council of Barcelona. I also worked as expert and reporter for the European Union, including the European Commission (DG HOME, DG Culture and ERA), as well as for the European Parliament. I am external counsellor at CCAR-CEAR and external adviser for JRS-Europe, both NGOs working with refugees and forced migrants.
Among my research responsibilities at present, I am member of the Executive Committee of the Migration Studies and Research Centre (CER-M, UAB), co-director of the Interuniversity LLM on Contemporary Migration (UB-UAB) and Director of its Summer School (UB-UAB-MDX). I am also the co-director of the Spanish Yearbook of Migration (Cidob Foundation).
In the past, I was Deputy Director of the Observatory of Public Law (2007-2011) and afterwards also its Vice-chairman (2011-2013), the Observatory is a special research centre at the University of Barcelona. At present, I am in charge of coordinating the research focused on immigrants and refugees at the Observatory.
